Problems with camera display screens

Especially if the surrounding lighting is very bright, many photographers that use digital photography have trouble reading the camera’s screen as it often overpowers the display’s lighting.

Camera screens are illuminated by background lighting. In order not to shorten the camera’s running time unnecessarily, it should only use a limited amount of power which also restricts the brightness of the background lighting. Some modern camera models have new built-in display screen technologies that allow incident light (e.g. sunlight) to be reflected behind the screen which helps intensify the background lighting. The screen’s resolution or that of the electronic viewfinder should be examined before purchasing as there are significant differences in quality depending on the camera model. A weak camera processor can sometimes lag when showing image on the display screen. This becomes clear when the camera pans rapidly. Whether or not the display screen can be swivelled is also relevant. In many cases, a swivel screen can increase the level of convenience for the photographer or can even enable certain shots. Additionally, cameras with swivel diplay screens opens up new perspectives for disabled people when it comes to creative and artistic image capturing.

Potential solutions

  • If the surrounding brightness level is high, a viewfinder is still advantageous. We differentiate between optical and electronic viewfinders.
    • The electronic viewfinder has an additional display screen that is shaded with a viewfinder hood from incident light and therefore is a sufficient option to use when creating an image.
    • For optical viewfinders, it is important to differentiate between rangefinder cameras and SLR cameras. SLR cameras have a bright and sharp viewfinder that reproduces between 95% and 100% of the captured image. Rangefinder cameras can result in parallax errors that mainly occur if the capturing distance is short. Here the image section seen through the viewfinder is not the same as that of the image captured.
  • A method that is not always particularly effective is to try and shade the display from incident light.
    • By hand or using other tools
    • Gear to shade the screen (e.g. viewfinder hood – is subsequently attached to the screen) 
  • Some display screens have a very small angle of vision. Slightly changing the angle of vision can be highly effective.
