Centre-Weighted Average metering

The centre-weighted metering mode is suitable for numerous subject situations. This is the reason why it was the standard metering mode on a lot of cameras for a long period of time. In this mode the entire image is used to meter the exposure. However, it concentrates more on the centre of the image.

Positive

  • The metering result is easy to comprehend and it is less influenced by small areas that vary in brightness with can be the case in spot/partial metering modes.
  • Combined with the manual diaphragm and exposure settings and with enough time at hand, this is a very good metering method (e.g. for architectural or night images)

Negative

  • This metering mode can be problematic if the image’s main subject only takes up a small section of the entire image, is on the image’s border or if there is high subject contrast.
